Published in Denver Witch Quarterly

denver_witch_quarterlyEven though I don’t live in Denver and don’t consider myself a witch, my article “Against Book Piracy” has been published in the latest issue of Denver Witch Quarterly. The current issue has a bunch of material about the now-infamous Donald Trump binding spell, but my article doesn’t have anything to do with that. If you’re interested in my thoughts on the binding spell and the “Trump Magick War,” they can be found here.

My article is more along the lines of my Truth About Writing post in the context of occult books and people who pirate them under the mistaken belief that we occult authors are making tons of money from our work. To be clear, we’re not. The occult is a tiny market, and at this point it’s pretty much impossible to make enough money writing occult books to live on, even at a minimum wage level.

The latest issue of Denver Witch Quarterly can be purchased here, from Smashwords.

Presenting at NOTOCON XI

I was originally asked to hold off on making this announcement until the official schedule was posted online, but since it’s up now I figure I can go ahead with it. This summer, I will be presenting on Heptarchial Evocation at NOTOCON XI, the eleventh biannual conference of Ordo Templi Orientis, in Orlando, Florida. The presentation is scheduled for 9 AM on Friday, August 11th of 2017. It might have been nice to do the presentation a little later in the day, since I’m not really a morning person, but it’s also pretty cool to be kicking off Friday’s track of ritual presentations.

The presentation will include a condensed version of my Introduction to the Heptarchia Mystica talk and a full Heptarchial evocation ritual done according to the procedure laid out in Mastering the Mystical Heptarchy, with a few additional tweaks for a Thelemic audience. After the conference, I will be making the text of my talk available over on Augoeides as per my usual practice. If you would like to buy a copy of my book to peruse before the presentation, just click on the title there to order.

So if you will be attending the conference, I hope that you’ll resist the urge to sleep in on Friday morning (which, to be fair, I might very well do myself if I wasn’t presenting) and come check it out. It should be a good time.

Featured on Thelema NOW! Podcast

This week my introductory lecture on Enochian magick is featured on Thelema NOW!, the official podcast of US Grand Lodge OTO. The Thelema NOW! homepage is here, and a direct link to the podcast is here.

The prepared text of my lecture was published over on Augoeides back in January right after I presented it, but one of the things about checking out the recording is that I don’t always stick to my prepared talk one hundred percent. Also, I usually allow people to ask questions throughout my presentations, and the answers to those are not included in the prepared text.

Enjoy!

Introduction to Enochian Magick Talk

holy_table_2I will be giving an introductory talk on Enochian magick at Leaping Laughter Lodge here in Minneapolis on the evening of Saturday, January 14th. Leaping Laughter Lodge is located at 3107 California Street NE, Minneapolis MN, 55418. The event will start at 7 PM.

Here’s a link to the event on Facebook, if you would like to attend. If you are not local, I will be posting the text of my talk over on Augoeides as usual a few days later so you can read it then.

Hope to see you there!

UPDATE: Full text of my presentation can be found here.

Ipswich Accepted by Moonfire Publishing

ipswich_coverIt’s been a while since I published my last fiction piece, but that’s not because I haven’t been writing any. Arcana, my first novel, was published by Pendraig back in late 2009. At the time, Pendraig was primarily an esoteric press, and my debut novel was their first fiction release. Arcana did what most indie novels do – it racked up some sales the first year it was released and then tapered off substantially.

Pendraig would go on to publish my Enochian series, but over the last couple of years the company made the decision to focus on esoteric titles rather than pursuing more fiction releases. As their esoteric titles are their best selling books, that probably is a good business decision for them. But it also meant that Ipswich, the second novel in my Guild series, was without a publisher. Fortunately, that has now changed. Ipswich was picked up by Moonfire Publishing, a new independent press here in Minnesota. The novel has been scheduled for a spring release if all goes according to plan.

Ipswich was shaped by some of the feedback I received from Arcana. The biggest problem with my debut novel is basically that people either loved or hated all of the technical magical exposition. All of that is in there by design, but treating urban fantasy more like hard science fiction was not what mainstream readers were used to, and resulted in a book that mostly appealed to folks already interested in esotercism. And the fact is, statistically speaking, there aren’t very many of those. So the idea behind Ipswich was to write a novel that was less heavy on the technical magick side and structured more like other urban fantasy titles that are currently popular.

I suppose time will tell how popular Ipswich turns out to be, but so far my trial readers have agreed that it is more readable, more fun, and less technical than Arcana. It tells the story of Sara Winchester, a young heiress and newly empowered magician. With the help of the Guild, she explores her newfound powers and the mystery of her mother’s untimely death. In her search for answers, she confronts a killer who can control the spirits of the dead and the machinations of a rival order seeking the Guild’s destruction. It also introduces some of the alternate history of the Guild universe, in which the direct Winchester family line never died out and the Winchester corporation became one of the world’s major multinationals.

I am currently in the process of working with an editor on the manuscript, but once it is released you’ll be the first to know. Watch this space for future announcements.

Liber Spirituum Deluxe Edition Available

liber_spirituum_deluxe_2
I have just received word that the deluxe edition of Liber Spirituum, the new anthology containing my essay “Evoking Zodiacal Angels,” is now available from Azoth Press. It is limited to 28 copies, so if you want one, get it while you can.

The deluxe edition is admittedly pricey, but the standard limited edition that I have in my possession is a beautiful book. I expect that the deluxe edition meets a similar standard of excellence, and it looks fantastic from the images that I have seen at the publisher’s web site.

Also, as a collector of such volumes, I can testify that they generally appreciate substantially in value after only a couple of years. So not only do you wind up with a lovely edition of an excellent book, it makes a solid investment as well.

The deluxe edition of Liber Spirituum can be ordered here, direct from the publisher. There are also more images at the link for you to check out.

Liber Spirituum Now Available For Pre-Order!

LiberSpirituum_540x200I am happy to announce that Liber Spirituum, a new anthology that includes my article “Evoking Zodiacal Angels” is now available for pre-order. If you’ve ever looked over the planetary conjuration work and wondered how you might apply those same methods to the angels of the zodiac, my article explains how to do just that in a fairly comprehensive fashion.

In addition to my article, the anthology also includes essays by a number of other well-known authors in the ceremonial magick field:

  • “Introduction ∙ Opening a Book of Spirits” by Adam P. Forrest
  • “The Place of Mingled Powers: Spiritual Beings in the Magical Lodge” by John Michael Greer
  • “Patrons and House Gods: Building Lifelong Relationships with Your Spiritual Guardians” by Aaron Leitch
  • “The Evocation of Metatron: A Golden Dawn Z-2 Ritual” by Charles Chic Cicero & Sandra Tabatha Cicero
  • “The Prayer for Success” by Jake Stratton-Kent
  • “Lay Thy Tongue Upon My Heart: Forty Days of Ritual Communion Between a Pagan Adept and the Archangel Raphael Tipherethel” by M. Isidora Forrest
  • “Substance Through Spirit: A Reflection on Magical Evocation and Talisman Construction” by Bryan Garner (Frater Ashen Chassan)
  • “Kalein tous Theous: Divine Invocation in the Late Neoplatonic Tradition” by Jeffrey S. Kupperman
  • “Evoking Zodiacal Angels” by Scott Michael Stenwick

The hardbound edition is limited to 500 copies. Printed in two colors throughout, with 2-color illustrations, bound in faux leather silk-touch cloth. Foil stamp on both the front and back boards, with a full color frontispiece by acclaimed artist Caniglia. The deluxe leatherbound edition is limited to 32 copies, with satin ribbon sewn-in marker, custom endpapers, and housed in a handmade tray case.

Solomonic Mini-Conference at Leaping Laughter Lodge

solomonic_conferenceLeaping Laughter Lodge, my local Ordo Templi Orientis body, will be holding a Solomonic Mini-Conference this coming Saturday, April 25th, at 1 PM. The mini-conference will be held at our new lodge space at 3107 California Street NE in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The suggested donation for attendees is $10.

I will be presenting a talk titled Introduction to the Thirty Aires, which will incorporate material from my not-yet-published third volume of the Mastering Enochian Magick series, Mastering the Thirty Aires. Also speaking will be Rufus Opus, on practical applications of Solomonic magick, and Joseph Peterson, on the history of the Goetia.

So if you live here in the Twin Cities or just happen to be passing through this coming weekend, I invite you all to check it out. It should be a lot of fun.

Mastering the Mystical Heptarchy Now Available for Kindle

heptarchy_cover_kindleThere’s a bit of a story behind this one.

My first book on Enochian magick, Mastering the Mystical Heptarchy, came out in 2011, back when many independent publishers were looking into Smashwords as an alternative to Amazon Kindle. An ebook edition was released, but it was only available from Smashwords. A lot of the folks who purchased it there probably just downloaded it in Kindle format and loaded it into their readers, but doing so is an extra step for anyone who isn’t technically inclined and the absence of the book on Kindle meant that it could not take advantage of Amazon’s integrated Kindle marketing.

This omission has finally been corrected, and you can now purchase the Kindle edition of the book directly from Amazon. Of course, for those who (quite reasonably) dislike Amazon’s dominance of the publishing marketplace, the Smashwords edition is still available. This just means that the ebook will now have a distribution channel through Amazon as well, so if that’s something you’ve been waiting for, go for it.

Holy Guardian Angel Available in Paperback

holy_guardian_angelHoly Guardian Angel, the anthology containing my essay “The Descended Angel,” is now available in paperback from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

As I had hoped, the limited edition proved successful enough to justify a mass-market release, so if you were interested in the material but turned off by the cost of the first limited edition you can now get your hands on it at a mass-market price.

In addition to my essay, the anthology contains articles from many other up-and-coming folks from the magical blogosphere, and the various perspectives represented make for fascinating reading. This is the only book I have ever read that covers the topic in such detail, and which brings so many experienced practicing magicians together to share their insights.

So far there’s still no ebook edition available, but if that changes I’ll be sure to keep you all posted.
