Adding Bluesky

I recently started using my Bluesky profile and have added it to my social networking links on the right sidebar. Bluesky has gotten a lot of attention recently with all the political drama swirling around X/Twitter and its owner Elon Musk. Essentially the platform is a less algorithmically curated version of what Twitter used to be like before it started its transformation into X. I also have discovered that WordPress can now automatically share posts to Bluesky, so I have enabled that feature for this site. If you’re reading this on Bluesky, that means it works!

The social media landscape is becoming more diverse, and that’s a very good development. Anything we can do to resist a couple of super-rich tech bros from dominating all of social media can make a significant difference. I also appreciate that Bluesky is not controlled by “the algorithm” that tries to decide what I do and don’t want to see, unlike Facebook and X. I was never a big Twitter user, but on Facebook I have something like 2500 friends and see posts from about 30 of them. I would much rather decide for myself whose posts I’m interested in checking out than relying on guesswork by the platform.

I also am starting to use MeWe again. I added it and kept up with blog posts over there for a while after I joined, but have neglected it for the last couple years. Like Bluesky, MeWe doesn’t rely on an algorithm to decide whose posts you are going to see, and especially these days I much appreciate that.
