Holy Guardian Angel Anthology – First Look

angel_contentsThe long awaited Walking With The Angel anthology from Nephilim Press, now re-titled Holy Guardian Angel, is on its way. Unfortunately, due to a problem with the bookbinder, there will be an additional delay of hopefully less than a month. M.C., the editor of the anthology, explains:

Last Wednesday, 500 copies of the book were delivered to Nephilim Press HQ. The book looks as unique and beautiful as the Angel of which it speaks. However, upon unboxing these volumes, Frank at Nephilim discovered an abnormality. Much to our dismay, the bindery had in some way erred, and, as beautiful as the books are, the covers on each and every copy were warped to such and extent that, laid flat, the cover has an upward bend of about 3/4 of an inch.

Still, his post includes some images of pages such as the Table of Contents above and the cover, which look wonderful. This is going be a beautiful piece of work, and I look forward to seeing its final form. Just as with contacting the actual Holy Guardian Angel, it should prove to be very well worth the wait.

Pendraig Publishing 2013-2014 Catalog

pendraig_logoMy publisher, Pendraig Publishing, has just released their full catalog for 2013-2014. The catalog includes interactive links from which you can order all of their titles including mine in both print and ebook editions, if available. Click here to take a look at the books that they currently have for sale, and keep in mind that they make great holiday gifts!

Note that the ebook version of Mastering the Great Table is still being put together, and once it’s available I’ll announce it here and over on Augoeides. Since the ebook version of Mastering the Mystical Heptarchy proved pretty popular, I’m really looking forward to seeing Mastering the Great Table available in the same format.

Mastering the Great Table

great_tableSo it’s finally here. Mastering the Great Table is now available from Pendraig Publishing.

Following the Enochian material that would become the Heptarchia Mystica, John Dee and Edward Kelley received a grid of letters called the Great Table that encodes a complex hierarchy of angels and demons, and a series of conjurations in the Angelic language called the Angelic Keys. These conjurations and the structure of the Great Table have inspired individual magicians and entire magical orders for centuries.

Author Scott Michael Stenwick now does for the Great Table what he did for the Heptarchia Mystica in the first volume of this series, presenting the material in a manner that is true to Dee and Kelley’s original schema along with a ritual template that includes both modern and traditional grimoire techniques. The entities of the Great Table possess a vast collection of powers well-suited to practical magical work, and have been employed in some of the most effective operations of the modern era. Unlock the secrets of the Great Table, and put them to work transforming your life.

Fall Writing Update

autumn-leavesIt’s been awhile since I’ve posted an update here, and I’ve been busy over the last six months. My new book, Mastering the Great Table, is just about ready to go and should be released soon by Pendraig Publishing. I also have an essay appearing in a new anthology, Walking With the Angel from Nephilim Press. So far I don’t have much information about when that will be released, but I’ll keep you all posted on its progress. The essay is adapted from one of the chapters of my unpublished textbook of ritual magick, Operant Magick, and addresses the Thelemic perspective on contact with the Holy Guardian Angel.

Once Pendraig finishes up Mastering the Great Table they also will be taking a look at my second novel, a loose sequel to Arcana that follows several new central characters and which is written in a somewhat more commercial genre-fiction style than the first book. So I’ve backed off on the long exposition of magical operations and tried to make it sound a little less like the characters are lecturing at each other in order to impart a bunch of technical information. Hopefully my publisher will like it as much as the last one, and I’m also hoping it will sell better. So far I’ve had a lot more commercial success with my non-fiction, even though the fiction market is a lot larger than the worldwide pool of Enochian magicians.

One piece of bad news for this year is that I won’t be doing NaNoWriMo this month. I did an “unofficial” one last year and established that I could in fact write fifty thousand words in a month and was going to do it for real this year, but unfortunately I broke my right elbow in a bicycling accident back in September. It’s healing up, but it’s not at the point where I can type that quickly or for that matter do a lot of work on the computer above and beyond what I’m already doing for work. So I’ll have to see about trying it out next year. I’m confident that I can do it once my right arm is back in working order.

Stay tuned for updates on the new Enochian book, the anthology, and the second novel. I’ll let you all know as soon as they’re available.

Spring Writing Update

Spring-Blossom-SunshineWell, at least it’s officially spring in a couple of days. Looking out the window here in the Twin Cities it still looks like winter, with snow falling and the temperature in the 20’s. We got spoiled by last year’s early spring, though hopefully that more normal spring weather means that we won’t see a crippling midsummer heat wave this year.

The contract for book two of the Enochian series, Mastering the Great Table is signed and off to my publisher and I anticipate starting in on the editing process soon. This book will cover the angels of the four Watchtowers, and unlike Mastering the Mystical Heptarchy explores an area of the Enochian system that has been extensively worked with by many different magical orders and systems. It includes some of the most recognizable components of the Enochian magical system such as the Angelic Keys and Enochian Tablets. Like my previous book, though, it will examine these more familiar components from a perspective more in line with Renaissance grimoire magick than the synthetic approaches taken by magical orders such as the Golden Dawn. So far I’ve heard nothing back on my manuscript for Ipswich, a loose sequel to Arcana. As my novel is not selling nearly as well as Heptarchy, though, I can see where it makes sense that my publisher is giving priority to the next book in the Enochian series. I’ll keep you posted as soon as I hear anything about it.

A few months ago I submitted an article on EMF and evocation to a proposed anthology from Immanion Press. Unfortunately, that anthology was cancelled due to lack of submissions. I got some better news over the weekend, that the article I submitted for a forthcoming anthology on the Holy Guardian Angel from Nephilim Press has been accepted. This anthology is still being assembled and I don’t yet have a publication date or any other information, but again I will keep you posted on it and promote it here and on Augoeides as soon as it becomes available.

To wrap up, here’s an article from Salon explaining why we writers really do need to keep our day jobs. The author’s book made the Amazon bestseller list for a couple of weeks and made him a total of $12,000. That’s not precisely nothing – for an occult title I would be ecstatic to make that much – but it’s nowhere near enough to live on. People sometimes assume that a bestselling book makes an author millions of dollars, but this is most emphatically not the case. On top of that, most of us don’t wind up writing bestsellers. The author comments that up until his bestselling novel his highest royalty payment was $153. That puts me in pretty good company – my highest so far wasn’t quite that much, but it was close. The point is, those of us who write do so because we like to write, not because it’s going to make us rich. This is especially true of esoteric titles, for which the market is much more limited.

Help an Author Out!

helpanauthorI’ve been meaning to put together something like this for awhile, but my fellow author Dan Waltz beat me to it. This image shows all of the different ways in which you can help a book become more popular on Amazon. Seeing as my publisher is small enough that their books don’t have much of a presence in stores, most of my books are bought online. If you like my work, I invite you to click on the image to enlarge and see if there’s anything you can do to help me with my promotional efforts.

The Mastering Enochian Magick Series

As I’ve previously stated, Mastering the Mystical Heptarchy is the first book in a series of three covering the methods I’ve developed for working with Enochian magick. There are two reasons that I decided to start with a book on the Heptarchia Mystica. The first is that the Heptarchia is less well-explored than the rest of the Enochian system, and the second is that it was the first portion of the system that John Dee and Edward Kelley received. The rest of the series will follow that same order as well.

Book Two – Mastering the Great Table. Currently submitted and in development, the second book in the series will explore the Great Table or Watchtowers of the Enochian system. The Great Table has probably received the most attention of all the aspects of the Enochian system and generally corresponds to elemental workings just as the Heptarchia corresponds to planetary operations. However, many of the attributions that have been ascribed to the Great Table contradict those of the original system as received by Dee and Kelley. As in the first book, I approach the system from a more grimoire-based perspective than that taken by the Golden Dawn system, but at the same time leave room for certain modern magical forms that I have found to be effective in my practice.

Book Three – Mastering the Thirty Aires. The Thirty Aires or Aethyrs get a lot of attention from Thelemites, as Aleister Crowley famously scried them as recounted in the The Vision and the Voice. The Golden Dawn system works with the Aethyrs, but at the same time does not add the same level of complexity to them as it does with the Great Table. In fact, the Thirty Aires serve two distinct functions in the original Dee system – the parts of the earth that they include are intended for use as reference points for targeting magical operations, and in addition they include a layer of symbolism suitable for practical zodiacal operations. Discussion of this latter aspect will include an overview of the Renaissance astrological methods with which Dee was familiar, as they differ substantially from the methods used in modern astrology. The book will also discuss political magick involving the various parts of the earth and how the Aires relate to the expansion of consciousness along the lines of Crowley’s explorations.

Author Site Updates

website_updateAlong with my recent stepped-up promotional efforts, I’ve made a few changes to this web site.

First off, I removed the blogroll page as it was getting out of date and according to my stats nobody was viewing it anyway. I maintain a list of blogs as feed content that runs down the right sidebar of my magick blog Augoeides, and it makes more sense to me to keep that information in one place rather than trying to update multiple lists and keep them synchronized – especially when the one at this site was essentially being ignored.

Secondly, I’ve rearranged some of the main page elements and added an “Urban Fantasy News” feed. This seems to be working reasonably well, much better than back when I was trying to maintain a “Magick” news feed. Incidentally, since nobody pays any attention to how they spell the word “magick” returns all sorts of junk from Google News, often albums where the musicians are changing the spelling because they think it looks clever. But there’s a purpose to the trailing K, or at least there should be. In the time of keyword searching, I can’t imagine a better time to alter the spelling of the word in order to differentiate “the science of the Magi from its counterfeits.”

Finally, I’ve added new Facebook page links for The Guild Series and the Mastering Enochian Magick Series, as my publisher is currently working on putting together sequels to my two published books. There’s no word yet on when they will be available, but I’ll be sure to keep you all posted as soon as I know. I’ve also added links for Arcana and Mastering the Mystical Heptarchy on Google+, for those who would rather use that platform. If you’re a fan of my fiction, non-fiction, or both, I invite you to “like” the relevant Facebook and/or Google+ pages for the series that you are interested in reading so that I can target my updates more effectively. The page for The Guild Series can be found here and the one for the Mastering Enochian Magick Series can be found here. The Google+ page for Arcana can be found here and the one for Mastering the Mystical Heptarchy can be found here.

Unofficial NaNoWriMo – Fifty Thousand!

So I did it. I’ve now completed fifty thousand words of my new science fiction novel The Pathless Void with two days to spare. I was going at a solid clip of two thousand a day up until the holidays, but wound up missing three days over the long weekend due to family commitments so I’ll probably be looking at 52 to 54 thousand written by Friday.

The novel is not finished yet. That will take longer. My guess is that the final draft manuscript will come out at 80-90 thousand words, meaning that I won’t be reaching the end until sometime in December. I hope that I can keep it up, though, since I’m really enjoying writing it and I think my fans will enjoy reading it as well.

I don’t know when the book will finally be available, but I’ll keep you all posted. I’m going to see if I can get it published as a piece of mainstream genre fiction, and if that fails I’ll make it available as an e-book, probably via SmashWords along with my other titles.

Unofficial NaNoWriMo – Halfway There

As of yesterday my retro-SF novel tentatively titled The Pathless Void is up to a little over 30,000 words. I’m realizing at this point that it’s not going to be finished at the end of the month, but that’s not necessarily a bad or unexpected thing. Novels of the genre for the “golden age” SF period tended to average somewhere around 80,000 words, so even assuming I make it to 60,000 by the end of the month there will still be more to go. I’m confident that I can keep up my pace after the end of the month, so that means the draft manuscript will most likely be finished some time in December.

I’m not going to make the same mistake as the last time I started a new novel for the November event. Demiurge, the sequel to Arcana, also was started as an unofficial NaNoWriMo project. At the end of the month I had 52,000 words, but then got stuck on the story and abandoned it for a couple of years while I worked on other projects. Now the draft manuscript is up to about 70,000 words and I think I know how I’m going to finish it, but I haven’t gone ahead and done it yet even though I last worked on it more than a year ago. I have no idea if The Pathless Void is going to interest publishers – my current publisher, Pendraig, publishes fantasy but not SF so I’ll have to either find another publisher or issue it myself as an e-book or something.

Have no fear, though – when I’m done with the book it will be made available in some form. Since I’m going to try other commercial publishers first it may be a little while before that happens, but rest assured that it will.
