Exploring EBooks

ebooksLately the ebook scene has been getting a lot of coverage, with talk about how it finally has become the next big thing in publishing. Experts have been predicting the shift away from traditional publishing, but in the last couple of years sales numbers show that it finally is happening.

Creating ebooks has also gotten a lot easier. You used to have to take your word processor document and run it through an application like Calibre in order to convert it to a proper ebook format, which was a picky process that took a fair amount of work. But now both Smashwords and Amazon’s Kindle Direct Publishing have conversion programs that work with regular Word documents.

A while back I created my first ebook on Smashwords, of a story called Cthulhu Unbound that I had submitted to a number of magazines. The story is a satire of the classic Lovecraftian tale. which follows the basic pattern of those stories but ends with a humorous twist. None of the places I submitted it seemed to know what to do with it, as it’s not exactly a horror story and not exactly comedy.

I think the ending is hilarious, though. Maybe you just need to have dealt with weenie Lovecraftian magicians who are all spooky and serious to get the joke. Obviously, that’s an experience that people outside the occult world probably haven’t had. So it fits the criteria of something that my readers will probably enjoy, even if regular folks find the central joke a little confusing.

In the ebook I also included a preview of the opening chapter of Arcana, with a link to buy the ebook edition of the novel. I released it on Smashwords for free, hoping that would mean lots of people would find it and read it outside my usual blog audience. However, that really didn’t work. Over the last year, it only had a couple hundred downloads and didn’t result in any sales of the novel.

So now I’m changing my approach. I’ve redone the ebook as a 99 cent title on both Smashwords and Kindle Direct. I’m also going through my library of unpublished material to see what else I might have that I could turn into another one. I also am going to be promoting Cthulhu Unbound more directly, as my previous experiment didn’t quite work as I imagined.

So if you’re interested in picking up a copy, you can buy it from Amazon or Smashwords. And as I explore the ebook format more thoroughly, there should be more of these to come.

Solomonic Mini-Conference at Leaping Laughter Lodge

solomonic_conferenceLeaping Laughter Lodge, my local Ordo Templi Orientis body, will be holding a Solomonic Mini-Conference this coming Saturday, April 25th, at 1 PM. The mini-conference will be held at our new lodge space at 3107 California Street NE in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The suggested donation for attendees is $10.

I will be presenting a talk titled Introduction to the Thirty Aires, which will incorporate material from my not-yet-published third volume of the Mastering Enochian Magick series, Mastering the Thirty Aires. Also speaking will be Rufus Opus, on practical applications of Solomonic magick, and Joseph Peterson, on the history of the Goetia.

So if you live here in the Twin Cities or just happen to be passing through this coming weekend, I invite you all to check it out. It should be a lot of fun.

Mastering the Mystical Heptarchy Now Available for Kindle

heptarchy_cover_kindleThere’s a bit of a story behind this one.

My first book on Enochian magick, Mastering the Mystical Heptarchy, came out in 2011, back when many independent publishers were looking into Smashwords as an alternative to Amazon Kindle. An ebook edition was released, but it was only available from Smashwords. A lot of the folks who purchased it there probably just downloaded it in Kindle format and loaded it into their readers, but doing so is an extra step for anyone who isn’t technically inclined and the absence of the book on Kindle meant that it could not take advantage of Amazon’s integrated Kindle marketing.

This omission has finally been corrected, and you can now purchase the Kindle edition of the book directly from Amazon. Of course, for those who (quite reasonably) dislike Amazon’s dominance of the publishing marketplace, the Smashwords edition is still available. This just means that the ebook will now have a distribution channel through Amazon as well, so if that’s something you’ve been waiting for, go for it.

Holy Guardian Angel Available in Paperback

holy_guardian_angelHoly Guardian Angel, the anthology containing my essay “The Descended Angel,” is now available in paperback from Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

As I had hoped, the limited edition proved successful enough to justify a mass-market release, so if you were interested in the material but turned off by the cost of the first limited edition you can now get your hands on it at a mass-market price.

In addition to my essay, the anthology contains articles from many other up-and-coming folks from the magical blogosphere, and the various perspectives represented make for fascinating reading. This is the only book I have ever read that covers the topic in such detail, and which brings so many experienced practicing magicians together to share their insights.

So far there’s still no ebook edition available, but if that changes I’ll be sure to keep you all posted.

Published in Occultist Magazine

occultist_magazineMy article “Remembering the Satanic Panic” has been published in Occultist magazine. The article first appeared over on Augoeides, and it talks about some of the nonsense that was going on in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s when Christian fundamentalists were running around claiming that huge Satanic cults were running America. Obviously, this was not the case. There have never been more than a few thousand Satanists out there, and most of them are just atheists who like spooking people.

You can order a copy of Occultist magazine here. It looks like a good publication, and I hope that it will prove successful enough that we will see many more issues to come.

Holy Guardian Angel Sold Out

hga_anthologyThe Holy Guardian Angel limited edition from Nephilim Press containing my essay “The Descended Angel” has now sold out. Accordingly, I’ve taken down the links to order it from this website and from Augoeides.

Hopefully a mass market edition of the book will be issued at some point in the future to give more students access to the material. The book contains many excellent essays, and in addition the juxtaposition of different perspectives provides a particularly insightful overview of the work.

Pagans Tonight Radio Appearance Archive

For those of you who were unable to tune in yesterday evening, you can listen to the archive of my appearance on Pagans Tonight Radio with Pam Kelly here. The interview went well and we covered a lot of material, and Pam is a gracious host. When you get a chance, check it out!

Pagans Tonight Radio Appearance October 12th

pagans_tonightThis Sunday, October 12th at 8 PM, I will be appearing on Pagans Tonight Radio promoting my books and discussing the basics of Enochian and grimoire magick. Pagans Tonight Radio is a blogtalkradio program that you can stream live from their website located here. I will also be linking to the program after the broadcast for those unable to hear it live.

I hope that you will join us for a fun and informative discussion, and don’t worry about getting lost if you’re not an Enochian or grimoire expert. I’m not planning on getting into anything too technical or obscure, just the stuff that you need to know in order to get started working the system. After all, the real secrets in magick are those that you encounter for yourself, and the best way to do that is to perform some operations and see what happens.

Mastering the Great Table eBook is Now Available

great_tableMy new book on working Enochian magick, Mastering the Great Table, is now available for Amazon Kindle and other ebook formats from Smashwords.

The Angel Has Arrived

holy_guardian_angel_cover The Holy Guardian Angel anthology that includes my essay, The Descended Angel, has finally arrived. In addition to my essay, it includes contributions from Michael Cecchetelli, Rufus Opus, Jason Miller, Aaron Leitch, Frater Ashen Chassan, Darren Scriven, Kevin Abblett, Derik Richards, and Conjureman Ali. As you can see from the image included in my last post and from the image of the cover shown here, the book is beautifully bound and typeset and is a work of art in its own right in addition to being a valuable practical text on contacting and working with the Holy Guardian Angel.

The first edition of Holy Guardian Angel is limited to 500 copies and may be purchased from the Nephilim Press website here. Buy yours today!
